Plot

In 2020, the world goes on lockdown as blind extraterrestrial creatures with extremely sensitive hearing search for future victims by sound. The Abbott family scavenge a local town for supplies, remaining as silent as possible and communicating solely through sign language. The youngest of the three children, Beau, wants a toy rocket, but his father removes the batteries and warns him that it is too loud. Regan, his older sister, gives him the toy back (minus the batteries) However, he grabs the batteries on the way out of the store. On their way home, Beau turns on the toy rocket. Then of course, the sound of the toy attracts the attention of one of the creatures. His father fails to get to him quickly enough, and he is swept away by the creature. They are revealed to be large, spider-like creatures.
A year later, following several prior close calls, the creatures have become aware of the Abbott family’s presence. The father Lee repairs his daughter Regan's broken Cochlear implantboosting the signal with scavenged radio parts from the abandoned town. Despite granting this to his daughter Regan, and his insistence that Beau’s death was not her fault (because she returned the toy to him) tensions develop between Regan and Lee.
Lee takes Marcus fishing, leaving Regan with her heavily pregnant mother Evelyn, despite her wanting to come too. At the river, behind the wall of sound at a waterfall, Lee and Marcus can talk freely for the first time in months, and they discuss Beau's death and Regan's feelings of guilt. Marcus asks his father if he loves Regan, and that he should tell her that he does. On their way home, the pair witness an old man standing over the dead body of an old woman, presumably his wife. Lee tells him to stay quiet, but he he commits suicide by screaming. Lee runs away with Marcus and hides behind a tree, and Lee watches as the man is killed.
At the farm, Evelyn goes into labour and while climbing to the basement, steps on a nail in the stair causing her to drop a family picture and alert the creatures. Despite attempting to be silent, laying in the bath while having severe contractions, eventually she screams and gains the attention of the creatures, but manages to alert the returning Lee and Marcus of the danger, by flipping a switch that change the house’s lights to red (a signal that the creatures are there). Lee and Marcus attempt to divert them with cached fireworks, but Lee is forced to leave the children to protect his wife. He finds her and their new baby son hiding in the bathroom, and narrowly avoids another attack when taking them to the soundproof basement. Evelyn orders him to find their other children.
Regan has visited Beau's memorial and, seeing the fireworks set off by Marcus, runs back to the farm. At the insistence of Evelyn, Lee eventually finds the children at a grain silo. Marcus had fallen in, Regan jumped in after him, and both of them nearly suffocated. They survived an attack by one of the creatures by hiding under the silo door, which had fallen into the grain. The high frequency of Regan's repaired implant had reacted to the proximity of the creature with a loud, high frequency sound and driven it off. The creature returns while Marcus and Regan are hiding in the truck. wounding Lee. Marcus shouts “Dad!” drawing the creature closer to them. Lee sacrifices himself to distract it from his children, after saying "I love you" in sign language to his children, before he is killed.
Regan and Marcus reunite with a grieving Evelyn and the baby. Regan, not having been allowed in the basement previously, now sees her father's notes on the creatures and experimentation with the several different implants. She soon discovers the accidental strength of the boosted Cochlear implant and utilizes this weapon to defeat the returning creature, by placing the implant on a microphone which painfully disorients it to the point it exposes the flesh beneath its armored head. Marcus tends to the baby in the corner. After Evelyn kills the vulnerable creature with a shotgun, they look at the cameras to see at least four of the creatures running towards the farm. Having acquired knowledge of the creatures' weakness, the family is prepared to fight back. Evelyn racks her shotgun, chambering a fresh shell.
